Frequently Asked Questions

The USMLE is a three-step exam series assessing a physicians’ application of knowledge, skills, and understanding of basic medical and clinical science in patient care. This is a required exam for medical licensure in the United States.

The USMLE consists of: Step 1, Step 2- Clinical Knowledge (CK), and Step 3. Steps 1 and 2 CK are multiple-choice exams, while Step 3 includes multiple-choice questions and clinical simulations.

This depends on your career goals and individual circumstances. Most medical students take Step 1 during their second year of medical school, while Steps 2 CK and 3 are usually taken during residency.

Preparation requires significant time and effort. It is essential to use high-quality study materials and focus on understanding the material rather than just memorizing it. Many students use study materials and resources from test prep companies or create study plans.

Step 1 and Step 2 CK Scores are typically available within 3-4 weeks from the exam date. Scores for Step 3 are usually available within 4-6 weeks.

The passing score is determined by the National Board of Medical Examiners (NBME) and the Federation of State Medical Boards (FSMB) and varies by exam. The 2021 passing score for Step 1 was 194, for Step 2 CK – 209, and Step 3- 198.

There are limits to take each Step. As of 2021, Step 1 and Step 2 CK- six (6) trial times and Step 3- four (4) times. It is important to note that each time you try, it will be recorded on your transcript. Multiple attempts may raise concerns for potential employers or residency programs.

Though a setback, you can retake after a specified waiting period. It is also essential to seek support from peers, mentors, or professional resources to help you succeed in your exam retake.
